Halberstadt MT-50

ANNOUNCEMENT:   HALBERSTADT MT-50

To honour the memory of French composer Vitaly Halberstadt, who died in October 1967, a tourney study is organized by French magazine Phénix.

Section A : free theme. Win or draw studies with no more than 12 men in initial position.
Section B : twin studies.

Nota : For good twin studies, there are two main requirements :
- the single ‘discriminant’, (i.e. the small difference between A and B) should be a light change, creating a subtle change in solution of B. The ‘quality’ of the discriminant is an essential criterion for the quality of the study.
- a try in A must be a decisive move in B and vice versa (see example). Camil Seneca, in a series of articles written in Thèmes-64, about the theory of twins, called this ‘essai caractéristique’ (characteristical try). Unlike what happens with problems, the characteristical try is not necessarily the key-move,
it can happen after several moves after a parallel sequence of moves in the two lines A and B.
Judges : Jonathan Mestel (IGM) and Alain Pallier

Submit your original studies to the tourney director : Laurent Riguet : This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or at
the following address : Laurent RIGUET - 1, rue Jules Verne - 60560 Orry-la-Ville - FRANCE
Deadline : October 25th, 2016 (anniversary date of Vitaly Halberstadt’s death).
Provisional award will be published in the Phenix issue of October 2017.

A pdf file will be published on the website magazine (http://www.phenix-echecs.fr/).
