Evgeny Ivanovič Umnov

(Russia, 11.2.1913 - 23.7.1989)

Since 1927 he has published more than 200 issues, mostly strategic in style in two movements, winning many prizes, including 16 first prizes.

He was international judge of composition (1956) and International Master of composition (1975).

Author of fundamental works on the theory and history of chess problems, he takes his name from a thematic combination called "umnov theme",

which consists of the occupation by whites of a house abandoned by blacks.

He published many issues in collaboration with other Russians, including Rafael Kofman and Lev Il'ič Lošinskij.

He received the honor of master of sports of the Soviet Union. By profession he was a mathematics teacher.
