Selection of out of more than 300 studies composed by

Alexander Osipowitsj Herbstmann

(Russia, 10.4.1900 -22.5.1982).

Strong chess player and prominent Russian composer born in Rostov del Don, who specialized in literature, playing as a professor of philology.

He was at the same time a prophylactic author of various chess themes (as, for example, the memories of the great composers that he knew,

and especially those related to the games and the Study that deal with singular sharpness and depth), reaching for their merits the nominations of international judge (1956)

and international master "honoris causa" (1959) for chess composition.
It is estimated that since 1924 Professor Herbstman has composed about 300 studies, most of which are distinguished by the originality of ideas

or by the rich imagination in the treatment of known subjects, many of which were awarded and distinguished in contests.

More than a hundred of these works are studies of drowned (a score in collaboration), and about 40 of positional tables (one-fifth in collaboration).
The versatility of his style also allowed Professor Herbsman to alternate the miniatures of classical conception with some works of a romantic type,

as was the fashion in those years previous to World War II.

In the technical aspect, his Studies are composed with the most varied material;

They often present very dynamic positions, with pawns in "capture trance", and in some cases even have the particularity of appearing a deceptive solution,

which increases the interest and the difficulty of the solution.

More also about him in magazines: EBUR/2/1990 and EG 71, 189.
